Wittopp is a professional geologist who has worked in or visited all the significant mines of the district. Author Wayne Babros has been a resident of Alleghany since 1969. He worked as a miner for several years. An avid historian and director of Underground Gold Miners Museum, he has conducted research for the California Parks and Recreation Department.
